Kena: Bridge of Spirits broke even in just one month

Kena: Bridge of Spirits was the debut title from Ember Lab – known best previously for their work on a number of animations including a viral short film based on The Legend of Zelda. Released in 2021 as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive, the award-winning action-adventure title has now been revealed to have managed to recoup all its costs in the game’s first month on market.

In a report published by Gamesindustry.biz focused on the success of Ember Lab in their transition from animation to game development, the publication revealed that the studio’s debut title – Kena: Bridge of Spirits – broke even within one month following its launch back in September of 2021.

Speaking on what’s next for the team, Ember Lab’s co-founders Josh Grier and Michael Grier revealed that they plan on somewhat maintaining the studio’s current size and scope, saying:

“I guess you can call us aging gamers, people who have less time to play things, so things that are more approachable from a scope perspective are always more appealing to us. We'll try to do something a little bit more ambitious as we grow, but we're still trying to be conscious of making something that's digestible and something that we will want to play as gamers right now in our current pace of life with kids and stuff.”

Kena: Bridge of Spirits drew the attention of many when it was first revealed thanks in part to the game’s extremely high-quality animations and a Pixar-like aesthetic – giving the action-adventure title a cinematic flare.

With a 10-20 hour long campaign, Kena: Bridge of Spirits did not out stay its welcome and managed to offer a consistent quality from beginning to end. It will be interesting to see what the team are working on next – especially in the wake of these most recent comments.
